As part of Heritage open days this year we are attempting to build and fire a medieval iron bloomery. Using iron oar, charcoal and traditional methods we will attempt to smelt iron in a medieval style bloomery furnace.
approximate timings for the experiment below
Thursday 18th & Friday 19th
Normal centre opening 11am. interactive games and armour . Bloomery Furnace build and drying fire.
Centre close 16:00 approx
Saturday 20th
Normal opening 10am. (Bloomery lit early am)
Bloomery furnace loading and firing throughout the day.
Illumination Workshop with Julia Baxter (Pre booking separately, fees apply)
Games, boat open, armour in the centre.
Bloomery opened and bloom of iron (if successful) worked at the forge.
Centre close when bloomery experiment finished (approx 5-6pm).
Sunday 21st
Normal opening 11:00
Boat open, Blacksmithing, games, armour etc in the centre.
Bronze casting experiments on the forge throughout the day.
Centre close at 16:00
