The next installment of the Irish Women in Jazz residency comes on June 7th. Join us for a LIVE podcast hosted by Jennifer McMahon (founder of Irish Women in Jazz) with a tribute to Billie Holiday.

Join vocalist Aleka, pianist Greg Felton and bassist Derek Whyte for a celebration of the songs written by and famously associated with Billie Holiday.

This intimate set will feature arrangements of her most well known songs including Don't Explain, Fine and Mellow and God Bless The Child as well as many others in her famous repertoire.


Aleka is a Romanian vocalist, cellist, composer and lyricist who lives in Dublin, Ireland. She has spent 20 years studying music, including a Bachelor of Arts in cello performance with the highest distinction, at the National University of Music Bucharest, and a B.A in Vocal Jazz performance, graduated with First Class Honors in Newpark Music Centre, Dublin, Ireland. Both her Ep 'Aleka' and her debut album 'Person I Knew' received 4 star reviews in The Irish Times. Aleka is a jazz lecturer in Dublin City University.


Described by BBC radio Ulster's Dr. Linley Hamilton as ‘an incredible force for good in Irish jazz, Greg Felton is a highly accomplished performer, improvisor, composer and educator from Dublin, Ireland. ‘Good Friday’ the debut album of his jazz piano trio, Origin Story, was named the jazz album of 2020 by the Irish Times. He was the featured artist on BBC Radio Ulster’s Jazz World in June 2021 as well as being featured in both ‘The Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland’ and ‘The History of European Jazz’ books. He is a fulltime jazz lecturer in DCU where he specialises in composition, rhythm studies, advanced harmony and jazz piano.


Dereh Whyte has played consistently with the leading jazz musicians in Ireland, and has also been playing in some of the U.K’s leading jazz venues. Derek is also involved in many of the Dublin jazz scene's more experimental jazz groups, many of which experiment extensively with unconventional approaches to rhythm and harmony. These groups include The Mike Nielsen Quartet, Electric Freeplay, ReDiviDeR, the Dirty Jazz Band and Fuzzy Logic Ensemble.


Doors open at 7.30pm and the podcast begins at 8pm. The entire evening is recorded and you can listen back to each month's episode. The performance will begin at 9pm.
