Course Dates: Monday 7, 14, 21, 28 October; 4, 11, 8, 25 November; 2, 9 December 2023

Course Delivery: This course will include a weekly in-person class lasting 2 hours, accompanied by supplemental resources. Each week, you will have access to contemporary online tools that highlight a key language teaching concept relevant to the upcoming session, along with 30 minutes of online exercises designed to reinforce what you have learned in class. Classes will be limited to a maximum of 20 students.

Learning Objectives: Students taking the level 7 course should either have completed an A Level or Leaving Certificate examination in the subject. The aim of Level 7 is to develop strong language skills and to build on grammatical awareness. Students will develop confidence that will enable them to express opinions, share experiences and explore selected Irish literature.

Potential Topics:

Modern day Irish heroes : Explore various media to develop vocabulary and enhance listening and reading skills. Build confidence to discuss personal heroes.

Language focus : An Chopail in all forms


  • Travel and Tourism : Tourism in the Gaeltacht. Discuss the impact of Irish language learners on the economy in the Gaeltacht. Build confidence to describe bucket list holiday destinations and the impact of travel on lifestyle.

Language focus : Saibhreas na Gaeilge

  • Celebrations of Irish Language and Art in Ireland : Discuss the annual Oireachtas festival through audio and written media.

Language focus : Saorbhriathar in all tenses

  • An Teanga Gaeilge : Learn about the impact of the Gaeltacht Bhóthar Seoighe on the Irish language in Belfast. Consider the importance of Summer Colleges.

Language focus : An tAinm Briathartha

Literature : Explore a poem / song rich in Irish language and culture.

Learning outcomes: Students will have cultivated an extensive vocabulary related to the topics mentioned above and will possess a thorough understanding of the key grammatical concepts. They will be capable of using words and phrases relevant to everyday life as well as some commonly used language and colloquialisms. Additionally, students will be able to engage in discussions and articulate their opinions using sophisticated language. They will recognise various language registers and tones appropriate to different contexts and will be able to express wishes, desires, and hopes effectively.

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be a minimum of 18 years old to register for an in person course and a minimum of 16 years old to register for any on-line Language Centre course.

What are the course fees?

There are different fees depending on registration type. All course fees are payable on enrolment. --Student fee: £20.00 --Staff fee: £20.00 --General Public: £88.00

Are these courses accredited?

A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly. A minimum of 70% attendance is required for certification.

In addition any current Queen's student can apply for Degree Plus accreditation. Degree Plus enables students to gain recognition from Queen’s for completing extra-curricular work related learning alongside their degree.

Most students gain Degree Plus by completing a Provider Verified Activity (Formerly Route A). It is also possible to gain recognition for more than one student led activity by submitting a Combined Experience Application (Formerly Route B).

How often do I attend?

Classes, which usually last 2 hours, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening, some are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon) and run for 10 weeks starting in October, January and April. You will also be expected to complete homework ahead of class.

Is my registration fee transferrable?

Yes, if you feel after your first class that the level of language is too high/low, you can transfer to another class, provided that there is available space.

What's the refund policy?

All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing. Refunds are paid as follows:

Semester 1 (Please note EVENTBRITE will charge 6% administration fee on all refunds)

Before (and including) 27 September – full refund

28 September to 5 October (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 6 October (inclusive)

All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
