The IRC Steel Challenge returns Friday, October 27th for a second year! Introduced in 2022, the challenge is still evolving. Like the Rimfire Challenge, it is only offered during the cooler months. • IRC Steel Challenge occurs the last Friday of every month (barring holiday scheduling issues, etc) and begins at 9am on the day.
• Registered guests are encouraged to bring their semi-auto pistols and/or their semi-auto “pistol caliber carbines” to the action pistol field for this event.
• This event is caliber specific in that only .22, .22 magnum, .25 auto, .380, 9mm, .40 cal, .45, 10mm, .38 Super, .38 special and .357 magnum are allowed. This specificity has to do with safety and muzzle velocities.
• IRC Steel Challenge gives registered shooters of the range the opportunity to do something they aren’t usually allowed to do. That is, to shoot as fast as their ability allows on steel targets and practice their magazine reloads in the process.
• The fee for this event is $21.40 (after tax). This fee however also includes the use of the standard pistol and rifle ranges.
• The course is set up in two (2) phases. Beginner and intermediate. The Beginner phase is four (4) steel silhouette targets side by side. Guests can engage these targets in any order they wish. They can shoot this side exclusively or they can then move to the intermediate side when they feel ready. The intermediate side is typical 10-14 steel targets. Some silhouettes, some round and some square. They can engage these targets in whatever sequence they wish. However, aside from the increased number of targets, this phase forces the shooter to perform reloads.
• IRC Steel Challenge will be overseen and governed by a range officer at all times. Guests will shoot one at a time and only when the range officer has called their name.
• This is an all-day event dependent only upon guest turn out.
• A sign-up sheet will be available at the main office at Indian River County Shooting Range and guests interested or intending to shoot this event are encouraged to add their names to the sign-up sheet when possible.
All guests and visitors must be registered and complete and sign the online safety waiver. Go to www.indianriver.gov/services/parks_and_recreation/shooting_range/index.php and click “Register Now”. Registration is free.
