Standing 135 feet tall, the Soldiers' & Sailor's Monument was erected by the State of Iowa, funded to commemorate Iowans who fought during the Civil War. The monument was approved in 1888, the cornerstone was laid in 1894, and the structure was completed two years later.Iowa History Journal Publisher Michael Swanger will talk about the design of this unique monument and the people featured, including 4 Iowa Civil War generals.
