About this Event

Co-hosted by the Greenbelt Museum and the Greenbelt Recreation Arts Program, with support from the Friends of the Greenbelt Museum.
Join us for an artist's talk and exhibition! The exhibition, Invisible City:
Photojournalism by Danielle Towers, will be on view at the Greenbelt Community Center, first floor halls from April 24 - June 12, 2025. Interspersed among the historic photos of Greenbelt – and in dialogue with them, discover eight contemporary images made by Towers for her senior thesis show at George Washington University in the spring of 2024. Towers describes her work as oscillating “in the space between change and permanence, the ideal and the real” as Greenbelt continues to evolve. Hear from the artists herself how this work examines the sentiments behind Greenbelt’s design and its implications for the future of suburban America, ultimately asking, how deep do the roots go? What would a city suited for our contemporary ideals look like? How long would it last?

The talk is a FREE, IN-PERSON event. We do not require registration in advance, but if you register, you will receive reminders for the event. The talk will take place in Room 112 of the Greenbelt Community Center at 15 Crescent Road, Greenbelt, MD. Free parking is available on site.

About our speaker

Doni Towers (she/her), is a photographic artist (b. 2002) from the Chicago suburbs working on long-form projects.

She lives in New York City where she is an intern at Magnum and a communications work scholar at Aperture.

Doni graduated with a BFA in photojournalism from the Corcoran School of Arts and Design at George Washington University (D.C.) in 2024.

While living in Washington D.C. Doni pursued multiple projects, notably her research and involvement within the historic government-funded, planned community of Greenbelt, MD, exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art (D.C.) In April 2025, the work will be exhibited at The Greenbelt Community Center as part of their yearly artist programming.

Greenbelt, Maryland, a National Historic Landmark planned community, was built in 1937 as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. The town was designed as a garden city that would be a model of modern town planning and cooperative living in America. To learn more, please visit GreenbeltMuseum.org.
