We are excited to announce our special Conquest Spotlight production for individuals aged under 18 - Invacuation Intervention – Some lessons are best learned the hard way written by Mark A Stubbs.Auditions for Invacuation Intervention are being held on Tuesday 9th December 7pm & Sunday 14th December 10am.
The production will be on Friday 20th February 7.30pm with rehearsals taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Sundays added closer to the production.
Plot Summary:
The play takes place during a history intervention class focused on World War 2 and the persecution of Jews, specifically referencing Anne Frank. The students are initially dismissive and unengaged. An intermittent alarm begins to sound, which Nat identifies as an "Invacuation! Lockdown!" drill. The Teacher leaves briefly to get a spare key, and when he returns, he is visibly panicked, reinforcing the lockdown.
The Teacher, with Josh's help, blocks the door with a bookcase and covers the door window with black paper. The students hear a crashing noise and suspect there is an axe murderer or shooter on site. Liam reports seeing a person with a large knife, and the Teacher later mentions the person having "crossbow bolts." The Teacher uses the confinement to draw parallels between their situation and Anne Frank's experience hiding from the Nazis, prompting the students to discuss racism, sexuality, and the importance of history.
The tension builds until the end-of-day school bell rings. The Teacher and Josh move the bookcase and paper. The Caretaker enters with a stick and a small saw, and it is revealed that the Teacher staged the "invacuation" with the Caretaker's help to make the history lesson more impactful and relevant. The students react with a mix of shock, fear, and admiration for the Teacher's elaborate deception, with most admitting they now understand the lesson better.
Characters:
Teacher: Male, down to earth, wants kids to do well.
Josh: The cool kid, loveable rogue, ladies' man. Wants to earn a living.
Liam: Not bright, easily led, a tryer, very influenced by elderly grandparents.
Jay: Male gothic type dress, struggling with sexuality, a loner. They prefer the pronouns "Them/They."
Nat: Cool Girl, school is not interesting.
Wren: Misses a lot of school, very rules orientated, maybe a little autistic.
Caretaker: Cameo role.
Staging Notes:
A faint ticking clock will be used throughout the production, increasing in volume during extended periods of silence to add tension and suggest it is deliberate.
