This course is designed to provide fundamental knowledge, skills and confidence for adults with little or no New Zealand bushcraft knowledge or experience to commence their activities in the outdoors more safely for a one-day or overnight hike. It briefly covers all the basics: planning, clothing, equipment, communication devices, Leave No Trace principles, cooking outdoors, navigation (map and compass), shelters (sleep outdoors), first aid, weather, river safety awareness, and survival techniques.Participants must:
Be over 18 years and fit to travel for approximately four hours across hill country, on a track, with a full pack.
On completion, the participant will have an experience of:
* How to plan and execute an easy bush trip involving camping out
* How to select and use suitable clothing and equipment
* How to operate camp stoves and manage fuels safely
* Operating in an environmentally responsible manner
* Understanding basic first aid and survival
* Carrying out map work and route finding on a track including applying basic map to ground skills and route finding
* Using bush walking skills including moving effectively with a group along a track
* Basic river safety
This course runs from 9:00 am Saturday 26th to 3:00 pm Sunday 27th November, at a campsite near Kaukapakapa.
Cost $120 per person.
Registrations close Friday 11 November.
