Introduction to Writing: Microfiction is part of a workshop series presented by Migrant Writers of Singapore and supported by Sing Lit Station and The Majurity Trust.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Everyone has a story to tell, and when we hear others’ stories, we begin to understand and empathise with them. This makes it imperative for us to hear different stories – as well as to also share our own story with the world. In this workshop, we will use short readings, a mixture of lectures, exercises, and instructor critiques to teach participants how to craft story ideas into fiction in its briefest form: microfiction (a narrative under 1,000 words). We will focus on distilling a story down to its essence, while still conveying meaning through the successful interplay between character, conflict, and theme.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:
Victor Fernando R. Ocampo is the author of the International Rubery Book Award shortlisted The Infinite Library and Other Stories (Math Paper Press, 2017 ; US edition: Gaudy Boy, 2021, Vibal 2025) and Here be Dragons (Canvas Press, 2015), which won the Romeo Forbes Children’s Story Award in 2012. His experimental interactive fiction piece “The Book of Red Shadows” debuted at the 2020 Singapore Writers Festival.
His writing has appeared in many publications including Apex Magazine, அரூ: இதழ் (Aroo), Daily Science Fiction, Future Fiction, Likhaan Journal, Strange Horizons, 科幻世界 (Science Fiction World) and The Quarterly Literature Review of Singapore, as well as anthologies like The Best New Singapore Short Stories, Fish Eats Lion: New Singaporean Speculative Fiction, LONTAR: The Journal of Southeast Asian Speculative Fiction, the Philippine Speculative Fiction series, and Mapping New Stars: A Sourcebook on Philippine Speculative Fiction.
He is a fellow at the Milford Science Fiction Writers’ Conference (UK) and the Cinemalaya Ricky Lee Film Scriptwriting Workshop (PH), as well as a Jalan Besar writer-in-residence at Singapore Literature Station (2020/2021). Follow him at: www.vrocampo.com
