Suitable for beginners and improvers.Soft pastel is a beautiful medium to use, whether it is used for a quick sketch or a finished painting for exhibition.
Pastel is an extremely versatile medium using pure colour and it can be applied with a myriad of techniques, some we will practice, others we’ll discuss for you to try at home or in future workshops.
In this workshop we will begin with a review of the different types of pastels available, hard pastel, soft pastel, pan pastels and pastel pencils, together with the different types of surfaces available.
We will complete a tutor led portrait of a highland cow on velour paper, where we will practice laying on glazes of colour, blending and impasto techniques to create texture and depth.
Loads of tips, suggestions and recommendations along the way from Paul Holmes, who is an award winning local artist who exhibits across the country and is also a tutor at Higham Hall in the Lake District.
Bring an apron or old shirt (to protect your clothes) some pastels if you have them, and an A3 size folder or plastic bag to carry your completed work home.
