This is a 5 week course from 11th September to 9th October
Learn to visibly repair clothes and textiles using creative hand stitching techniques.
A bit about the Artist
Lorna is an artist and clothes mender with a background in costume, textiles and dressmaking, who will guide you in both traditional and experimental methods of mending, choosing the right tools and materials, and finding what works for you. Follow her on Instagram @lornasaurus
Turn something damaged into something uniquely beautiful using stitch and spare fabric, extend the life of your clothes and textile items and relax into mindful stitching in a friendly, supportive environment.
Week 1: Introduction to tools and materials, choosing the right fabrics, patching holes with fabric
Week 2: Focus on darning, choosing colours, darning as decoration
Week 3: Focus on Japanese mending techniques
Week 4: Focus on embroidery, expressing yourself through mending
Week 5: Creatively combining techniques, work on personal creative mending projects
Materials will be provided but you are encouraged to bring along any pieces that you wish to mend.
The course is suitable for complete beginners or those wanting to refresh their skills.
Hot drinks and biscuits are included.
To ensure this Introductioon to Visible Mending Course is accessible to everyone we have made it Pay What You Can for the 5-week Course. We have suggested £10 per session to help cover costs but if this is not affordable for you then please input what you can. (When booking, please add a donation of however much you can afford for the 5-week course). Any donation is welcome. Stitch-Up CIC is a social enterprise and any profits we make are reinvested straight back into delivering our creative community projects supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Leeds to learn new skills and improve wellbeing.
We will also be using this time to gain feedback from participants about what creative activities they would like to see going forward at Meanwood Community Centre so all feedback is greatly appreciated.
There is ample parking available at the Community Centre Car Park. If you cannot fit in the Car Park, please park on the main part of Stainbeck Avenue, with consideration to the residents please do not park in the cul-de-sac.
The Stitch-Up Studio is to the rear of the Community Centre. Once you arrive in reception please follow the signs for Stitch-Up.
