Discover the quiet power of ink and brush in Introduction to Sumi-e Painting, a six-week beginner coursesponsored by Shelby Regional Arts Council, Inc. (SRAC) and held at the Dogwood Art Gallery. Participants will explore the history and philosophy of Sumi-e—an expressive ink painting tradition rooted in East Asia and
closely tied to Zen ideals of simplicity, spontaneity, and harmony with nature—while learning the essential tools
and techniques of this art form. The class introduces brushes, rice paper, ink, and ink stones, along with
methods for preparing ink, creating tonal variations, understanding brush handling, and observing how ink
behaves on paper. Students will practice the foundational strokes used to paint the classic “Four Gentlemen”
motifs: bamboo, grass orchid, plum blossom, and chrysanthemum, as well as basic composition, placing a seal
or chop, and mounting finished work for display.
Beginners warmly welcomed. Continuing students are also welcome.
Materials must be purchased before class; a materials list will be emailed at registration.
