About this Event
Welcome to the Introduction to Sloyd Carving-Woodworking Basics event!
Join us on Sat Sep 06 2025 at 09:30 AM at The Shop_Build Trybe for a hands-on experience in traditional wood carving techniques. Sloyd woodworking is an expressive and craft-based approach to carving and building that is rooted in values like self-sufficiency and function. Developing sloyd carving skills can turn the sound of a tree being cut down in an urban neighborhood into a call to creativity.
In a 4-hour session at We Open Shop, students will get an introduction to sloyd carving and make at least one wall hook from a tree branch.
Students will leave with skills to help them feel confident:
- Using safe and strong knife grips
- Sourcing and selecting green wood (i.e., freshly cut wood)
- Understanding sharpening methods
- Decorating green wood with milk paint and additional carved marks
- Using a carving ax and other common green wood tools, such as froe, chopping block, and spoon mule.
Students who have a hook knife may also bring it for advice on spoon carving.
