Introduction to Scrambling: Thunderbird (C-3-B)

Preface:
I recommend this hike for INTERMEDIATE LEVEL HIKERS (must be hiking frequently) looking to improve their scrambling abilities. Throughout my time hiking in the Sun City, I have noticed that many hikers tend to struggle with "Rock Sense". While cardiovascular endurance plays a crucial role in becoming a strong hiker, the ability to effectively and safely navigate between boulders, walls, ledges, etc., is just as important especially when out on advanced level hikes.
There are 4 classes of scrambling (there is a 5th class but that's climbing if we're being honest). In my own interpretation, I consider Class 1 & 2 to revolve around either walking up or down slab with a manageable slope and/or maneuvering around large rocks that require the use of hands. I'd say most hikers are more than capable of handling these grades. However, Class 3 & 4 is where the stakes are much higher due to exposure and risk of more serious (even deadly) falls/injuries. At this class, one must typically rely on at least 3 points of contact on the rock and the utilization of foot and handholds will be pivotal. Essentially, this is the where novice level climbing begins, especially at Class 4, (essentially solo rock climbing) where falls may prove to be fatal. Fear not, for this hike will consist of nothing higher than a short Class 3 scramble.

ADK Rating Scale: C-3-B+ (If confused, refer to explanation below)
This hike is DIFFICULT with a significant amount class 2-3 scrambling throughout. We'll also be moving at a easy pace.

ADK Mountain Ratings Explained...
Hikes are rated for pace (A, B or C), mileage, and terrain (A, B or C), with "C" designating easier hikes and "A" more challenging ones. We recommend that new hikers should first try a "C" or short "B" hike before undertaking a more difficult one; otherwise, you may not fully enjoy the hiking experience. If you have any doubts, please contact the hike leader in advance.
Pace Ratings:
A = Fast - 2.5 mph or faster
B = Moderate - about 2 mph
C = Easy - 1.5 mph or less
Distance*:* Noted in miles
Terrain Ratings:
A = Strenuous, long/steep climbs and descents, abundant scrambling ranging from classes 3-4
B = Moderate climbs and descents, possible scrambling
C = Generally flat with little elevation change
For example, a hike rated “B-7-A” is a moderately paced hike of approximately 7 miles with steep climbs and/or descents and possible rock scrambling.

Hike Details:
We'll step off NLT 0810, so I would advise showing up 10-15 minutes prior so we can introduce ourselves and pay the park fee if need be. This 3 mile, out & back hike will start at the Jan Sumrall Memorial Trailhead, which will require a *$5 fee unless you possess a Texas Parks Pass. We'll start off on a well marked and wide trail with a steady incline. This will eventually lead us into the mouth of the canyon on the right. Once we hit wall on the red rock, the fun begins. We'll scramble our way up until we reach the designated stopping point (or until someone falls...just kidding lol) which should occur when we reach about 1100 feet of elevation gain. Scrambling up is just one half of the hike... On some hikes, there won't be a walkable loop around so one must be able to safely scramble down as well. If you wish to one day embark on those mythical hikes way out in the Organs, you must be able to do this. It's like the old adage goes, "What comes up, must go down". The route is abundant in scrambling ranging from Class 2-3. I predict that the hike will take roughly 3-4 hours depending on the speed of the group.
