Learn the basics of how to safely operate motorized tools such as a; Chop saw, Jigsaw, Pillar drill and Orbital sander.
Learn how to safely use a range of power tools to improve your DIY skills. This course is perfect for those who have completed our Level 1 handtools course, and for people confident with handtools, measuring and constructions skills who are lacking confidence in using power tools.
In this course you’ll learn the basics of how to safely operate motorized tools such as ; Chop saw, Jigsaw, Pillar drill and Orbital sander.
You’ll make a small caddie project to learn the safe working practices and skills needed to operate powertools.
Duration
5 hours with a 30 minute lunch break. 10am - 3pm. Tea and coffee breaks are optional. Lunch is not provided so please bring lunch with you, there are places nearby to grab some lunch if needed.

What skill level should I be?
The course is designed to build on the skills and techniques you have learnt in our "Introduction to Woodwork - Hand Tools 1 and 2" course. So ideally, we ask that you complete our "Hand Tools 1" course before booking. If you are a confident woodworker, who can use handtools, measure and construct proficiantly you are welcome to enrol. However this course is not designed for complete novices. We do this to make sure all participants get the most out of the day and can learn as much as possible while being at the same level as the rest of the group.
What will I learn?
You will learn how to safetly use a;
-Chop Saw
-Jigsaw
-Bench Pillar Drill
-Orbital Sander
We will cover all the safety considerations and PPE that should be used as well as hints and tips of how to use tools efficiantly and safely. During the session you will learn to make a small caddie as a project to practice your new skills with.

Another main aim of this course is to empower people to be able to complete their own jobs or projects at home and give them confidence in their own woodworking ability by developing skills. We want to make people comfortable using timber yards, tool suppliers and places such as Leeds Wood Recycling
Who is the tutor?
We have a pool of experience makers from a range of backgrounds, such as furniture/ cabinet makers and restorers, luthiers, picture framers, eco and site builders and joiners.
What do I need to bring?
All tools are supplied. Lunch is not supplied so make sure you've got some with you. Please wear clothes suitable for dusty work and sensible shoes. We provide the hot drinks and biscuits for the break. Please bring warm clothing – we recommend you bring layers – it can be cold in our workshop even in summer.. It's also a good idea to bring a notepad and pencil so you can make notes!
Where can I park my car or bike?
There is free car parking opposite LWR (it’s free to use for LWR participants.) You're welcome to bring your bike in the warehouse to keep it safe.

We offer up to 2 free places per course as a thank you to our long-term volunteers and members of staff. This experience gives people who are marginalised from the job training market free experience and training which can help them develop and make positive changes in their lives. We promise to continue diverting wood waste from landfill and continue to support marginalised individuals creating a supportive community.
