Covers all steps up to live blood draw

Practise on artificial arm and fake blood!

Skills for Health (HSC376) & WHO compliant

Basic understanding of English language required

PART 1 - CLASSROOM Theory: Attend a classroom location for one full day

PART 2 - CLASSROOM Skills and Practical Development: Attend a classroom location for one full day

Blood Collection Systems

Anatomy & Physiology

Blood Composition

Using the Equipment

Performing the Venepuncture

Lab Tests & Bottle Types

Analytical Errors

Practical Sessions:

Equipment familiarisation

Using the tourniquet & identifying a vein

Handling & assembling the equipment

Hands on approach using vein blocks

Performing the venepuncture (on artificial arms)

Role Play

Home Study Pack - A Home Study Pack will be provided to you prior to attending the course and is an integral part of your learning programme. Completion of this assignment is recommended prior to attending the course and is designed to provide you with a basic knowledge of several fundamental subject areas.

Learning Outcomes

Trains up to point of live blood collection

Covers all essential theory and skill-set development to meet medical standards

Blood test types, collection systems, consent, legal requirements, blood composition, preventing collection and analytical errors

No other course required to draw blood from patients / clients (consenting adults)

Progression route to advanced and cannulation courses as required

After the Course

Safely and competently draw blood from clients

Understand the correct procedures to draw blood from a wide range of challenging situations

Follow correct procedures dealing with handling errors

Know which bottle types to use for different blood tests

Meets or exceeds Skills for Health and WHO healthcare mandates
