If you have been wanting to try your hand at oil painting, or if you already paint but would simply like to review some basic principles, this class will meet you “where you’re at”. We will explore some of the fundamental principles used by artists to depict and interpret the natural world. We will be looking at light and color to see how it interacts with form and atmosphere, and use class exercises to help demonstrate those principles, which will contribute to the creation of more compelling paintings in any genre or style. During the last two sessions students will work on projects of their own choice.
• Session 1 (Oct 3) We will discuss materials, studio safety, and references for painting. We’ll paint a simple white object to study value.
• Session 2 (Oct 10) A discussion of light and what it does to color as it rounds a form. We’ll paint an extremely simple still life of brightly colored objects.
• Session 3 (Oct 17) Atmospheric perspective for Land-(or City-)scapes. Students will complete a simple landscape exercise.
• Sessions 4 & 5 (Oct 24 and 31) Students will work on projects of their own choice
