Join us for a one-day Introduction to Navigation Course in the beautiful Marlborough Downs, and learn the essential map and compass skills to confidently plan and follow your own routes.
This hands-on, practical workshop is ideal for complete beginners or anyone looking to refresh their navigation skills. With small group sizes, you’ll get plenty of personal support and time to practise in a relaxed, outdoor setting.
What You’ll Learn
This practical course covers the key skills needed for safe and enjoyable adventures in the hills, moors, and mountains of the UK, including:
Understanding and using 1:25,000 OS maps
Reading grid references and using Romer scales
Recognising map features and symbols
Setting the map and using a compass
Following linear features (“handrailing”)
Measuring distance, pacing, and timing
Taking basic compass bearings and route planning
Rights of way and access awareness
By the end of the day, you’ll feel confident using a map and compass to explore safely, whether hiking solo, with friends, or on group adventures.
