About this Event
Confused by the verbiage around the new FDA Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA)? Sarah Horowitz-Thran is here to help you navigate this new world of regulation and best practices, with humor, generosity and insight from decades of experience.
This class will be focused on understanding MoCRA, how it may apply your own creative practice, and your best practices for compliance with MoCRA.
We will start by focusing on the important questions every commercial perfumer or aspiring perfumer should ask and answer, around the best practices of perfume production.
We will then talk about such crucial subjects as new important terminology. We will also look at the labeling responsibilities, and cover safety issues, documentation, and more topics under MoCRA’s jurisdiction.
All in all, this will be an information-rich session from a veteran perfumer who now heads a MoCRA compliant Contract Manufacturing facility, with 20k sq feet dedicated to filling orders from 100 units to 100k units at a time, for clients selling to stores such as Sephora, Ulta, Nordstroms and more.
Topics covered:
+ Introduction to the FDA and MoCRA
+ Cosmetics regulation: IFRA, MoCRA, and more
+ Recommendations on best practices
Take-Aways:
+ Guidelines for best practices compliant to MoCRA
+ Resources for future research

About the Instructor
Sarah Horowitz-Thran has been creating perfume for over 30 years, and is known as one of the Pioneers of Indie Perfumery. Her fragrances are worn and loved by many, including celebrities, stylists and media personalities, and have been seen on the shelves of world class retailers.
Sarah began designing custom fragrances in the late 1980’s. A theater major, she stumbled upon part-time work at an off-beat, apothecary- style perfumery called Essence on Boston’s famed Newbury Street, which specialized in creating custom fragrances for its clientele. Fueled by an intuitive knack for perfumery and the conviction that fragrance was a vehicle for self-expression, Sarah would work one-on- one with clients to design their perfect scent. She called this process The Fragrance Journey, which would become the heart and soul of her business. In 1994, she packed up her perfume oils and moved to Los Angeles, founding Creative Scentualization, which later gave birth to Sarah Horowitz Parfums.
Sarah Horowitz Parfums is a CA-based niche fragrance house credited with the creation of Sarah’s own lines, SHP Evolution, the Perfect Perfumes and the Perfumer's Palette; as well as a number of blockbuster private label fragrances that have attracted a cult following among fashion industry insiders and celebrities across the US.In 2017 SHP opened a small run, high end filling and manufacturing arm focusing on production servicing the ever growing Indie fragrance community which she helped build. Today, the Contract Manufacturing arm has grown to incorporate 20K sq feet, along with the equipment and personnel to manufacture for clients both large and small. She splits her time among her passions - her love of fragrance, andher love of family - as her primary focus is her husband, Greg Thran, and their two daughters, Jessica and Gianna.

Cancellation Policy
When we host a class or workshop, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials. With all that said, here’s our refund policy for in person classes!
– Cancellation with refund or credit requests made 1 week or more (7 days) before the scheduled session will be honored with gusto! We’ll miss you, but will 100% refund your spot.
– Refunds or class credits requested less than 7 days before the scheduled session: We will refund you 50% of your class fee. Why? Because we’ve already ordered the materials.
– Refunds or class credits requested less than 48 hours before the class, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted.
– Cancellations or refund requests must be made by email (hello@artandolfaction) or via the Eventbrite ‘request refund’ option.
