MWEE stands for Meaningful Watershed Education Experience. The MWEE is a learner-centered framework that focuses on investigations into local environmental issues and leads to informed action. It focuses on inquiry-based education and includes learning about a current issue and following through with a call to action. MWEEs are made up of multiple components that include learning both outdoors and in the classroom and are designed to increase environmental literacy by actively engaging students in building knowledge and meaning through hands-on experiences.
For this workshop, we will go into depth about what a MWEE is, what it may look like in your classroom, and brainstorm together ideas of how we can upgrade our science lessons to make them more meaningful. We will also conduct a stream study and learn how to mock one in the classroom if a stream trip is not possible. After lunch, we'll dive into phenomenon-based education and how journaling can help your students better observe and retain the world around them.
Lunch will be on your own. There are several local restaurants and grocery stores about 5 minutes of the park, but we recommend ordering ahead as we will have a half an hour for lunch. There is a microwave in our classroom if needed. We will be based out of our park office classroom, but will be going outside for several activities. Bring water shoes or boots and be ready to participate in the stream study. We will provide other equipment. Bring any water or snacks you may need.
