We are excited to announce that the Halifax Harness Hounds will be hosting an Introduction to Harness Dog Sports clinic on Saturday, September 28th at 8:00am. It will take place at Long Lake Provincial Park located at 10 Dunbrack St.
We will teach you the basics of harness sports through canicross or a cani-walk. We always start on our feet as this is the safest and easiest way to teach your dog new commands.
During the session you and your dog will learn how to communicate and begin working together as a team by practicing:
- starting and stopping
- speeding up and slowing down
- how to safely pass others without engaging
- how to anticipate and avoid distractions
- how to navigate directions
We will also learn how the gear works, discuss mileage building and safety practices while working with your dog in harness!
GEAR:
We will have gear on hand for teams to borrow during the session.
You will need:
1) A well fitting harness designed for harness dog sports
2) A canicross belt and bungee or a hands-free leash
Properly fitting gear is very important. We have lots of gear on hand but we ask that you arrive with a back-clip harness in the off chance we do not have a harness that fits your dog or we have multiple dogs the same size. At the end of the class, we will show you how to measure your dog to ensure you are all set to get your own gear too!
COST:
45$ per person. Includes gear rental for the class, your class fee, & club yearly membership.
Optional: Introduction to Bikejoring/Scooter on November 2nd at Shearwater Flyer Trail located at 1340 Caldwell Rd. at 7:00am - Additional cost: 15$
We will be offering this as an OPTIONAL second introductory class that you can add on to your registration. If you would like to learn how to bikejor or scooter with your dog, this option is for you!
You MUST participate in the first introduction session on foot in order to attend this one. Your dog should have a good understanding of the commands we reviewed in your first class in order to participate in wheeled sports.
You should be comfortable on a bike or scooter before attending.
You will need to bring:
- A bike or scooter that is suitable for the terrain and activity, as well as brakes that can immobilize the team. We highly recommend a mountain bike or scooter with disc brakes.
- A helmet
- Sunglasses or safety goggles are recommended
We will provide lines and other safety equipment.
