The Cyanotype process, characterized by its prussian blue hues, was created by John Hershel in 1842. The process remains popular among beginning and seasoned alternative process practitioners due to its unique color, inexpensive supplies, and uncomplicated technique. Most alternative and historical photographic processes require the use of a large negative. Digital tools have revolutionized these processes by facilitating the creation of large negatives without the need of a large camera. Each alternative process has specific characteristics and tonal range therefore requiring a custom negative specific to the process.
In this workshop, participants will explore the Cyanotype process and learn the workflow for making custom digital negative curves. Participants can later use this workflow to create digital negatives customized to the process of one’s choosing.
This workshop does not require previous photography experience, however, some knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is recommended. A laptop with Adobe Photoshop installed is recommended but not required for the digital negative portion of this workshop.
This workshop takes place 10-4 February 7 and 8.
