Introduction to Collagraph Printmaking - 3 weeks Wednesdays 10-1pm

Collagraph is an exciting versatile process, readily enabling the exploration of marks, texture, shape, tone and colour.  Over this 3-week course you will learn how to make and print plates for both relief and intaglio printing processes.

There will also be time to experiment, and combine printing methods in the last session.

Week 1 – Collagraphs for Relief printing

There are many ways of making collagraph plates. We will start with card cuts and texture to create variations in surface and tone for relief printing.

Week 2 –Collagraphs for Intaglio printing

You will make a plate for intaglio printing introducing more painterly marks using carborundum, which gives rich tones and learn the intaglio printing process

Week 3 – Printing – experimentation

You will explore further the different printing methods, with your printing plates.

Potentially you can combine the different printing methods, exploring overlays and collaged elements as required

Shirley Stevenson is an experienced artist, printmaker and tutor. She works mainly with drawing, relief and intaglio print processes, and has used collagraph technique as a central part of her practice. She has taught printmaking in further education for many years and enjoys sharing her skills with others.

All materials and equipment will be provided.

You may want to bring some ideas, imagery or reference material to draw from. If you are using an existing artwork please check and respect copyright.

Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy. Aprons will be provided.

You may want to bring a packed lunch and your own water bottle (though there is a small supermarket close by). Teas and coffees are provided.

Carousel Print Studio is a not for profit charity based on the ground floor of Yorkshire Art Space, Exchange Place Studios in Castlegate. Carousel provides educational workshops in printmaking and opportunities for creatives in Sheffield, in a bright, warm, accessible and well equipped printmaking studio. We are a non toxic studio.
