An in-depth exploration into batik, an Indonesian fabric decoration technique using wax resist and dye.
About this Event

Learn the ancient medium of batik in this fun textile arts class!

Batik is fabric dyeing characterized by use of wax as a resist- ‘crackle’ is the distinctive effect. Indonesian artists developed batik from a traditional craft of decorating clothing into a modern art. Its challenging and unique method of mark making yields special visual textures and a luminous quality of color.

Participants in this class will learn several ways to apply wax, how to use fiber reactive dyes, batik-specific design considerations, and finishing steps. We will have time to work at least one piece all the way through: wax-dye-repeat-boil out. All supplies will be provided. Participants may bring their own fabric to work on - pure cellulose fibers such as cotton, linen or rayon take dye the best.

All experience levels are welcome in this class! Perfect for anyone who enjoys working with textiles, appreciators of surface design, and artists looking to explore a very unique medium.

This class is taught by Oregon-based textile artist Cooper Otte.

This class is held in the print studio in the main art building on the AAC campus. Directions and parking information will be included in your confirmation email.

Class Dates: Saturday 11/9, Sunday 11/10, and Monday 11/11 (Veteran's Day) from 2-6pm

Registration: Please register early if you are able, as it helps us to assure that classes meet their minimums in order to run! If you register more than three weeks before this class begins, a 20% early bird discount will automatically be applied to your ticket at checkout.

A Note on Ticket Pricing: We are experimenting with offering sliding scale tickets in order to keep our classes accessible to as many community members as possible. There are three price tiers. Sustaining tickets help us continue to invest in programming. Full price tickets cover the costs associated with running classes. Accessibility tickets are priced below what it costs for us to run a class. If the cost of a full price ticket is a hardship, we encourage you to purchase a sliding scale ticket. If you can pay the full price or sustaining price, please choose that option so we can keep providing arts programming to the community.

Tuition Assistance: Tuition assistance is available for Alchemy classes and workshops if finances are a barrier. Apply for tuition assistance here.
