Join us at this public event to launch the James Hutton Tercentenary celebrations. James Hutton (1726-1797) is widely acknowledged as the Father of modern geology, a self-taught Edinburgh philosopher who made significant contributions to the understanding of Earth processes and agriculture. As we approach 2026, the “Tercentenary Campaign Group” of organisations and individuals are working together to reintroduce James Hutton to Scotland and the wider world, learning more and sharing an appreciation of his legacy.
Our panel of speakers are
Prof Colin Campbell, CEO of the James Hutton Institute
Dr Rachel Walcott, Head of Mineral, Meteorite and Rock collections at the National Museums Scotland
Dr Angus Miller, Promotion Coordinator, Edinburgh Geological Society
The event will be chaired by Dr Hermione Cockburn, Trustee of National Museums Scotland. She will lead the panel in discussion about Hutton’s contributions to agriculture and geology, and plans for the Tercentenary 2026. There will be opportunities for questions and contributions from the audience. Afterwards, there will be stalls and information from partners, and the bar will be open for refreshment and conversation.
Tickets £6 per person – please book in advance via WebCollect
