Introduction to Woodworking: Build Your Own Cutting Board

Dive into the world of woodworking with this beginner-friendly, hands-on class where you’ll create a beautiful, functional cutting board from start to finish. Perfect for those new to woodworking or looking to refine their skills, this two-day workshop will provide a comprehensive introduction to essential tools, techniques, and materials.

Class Details:

  • Dates: March 5 & 6
  • Time: 5:30–9:30 PM each evening

What You’ll Learn:

Day 1:

  • Sourcing materials and understanding basic woodworking terminology.
  • Breaking down and milling raw materials.
  • Preparing parts for assembly and gluing up your cutting board.

Day 2:

  • Shaping and refining your glued board into a dimensional, regular cutting board.
  • Adding edge profiles for a custom look using a router table.
  • Hand-sanding and applying the finishing touches to protect and beautify your board.

Throughout the class, you’ll gain experience with key woodworking tools such as the miter saw, table saw, jointer, planer, drum sander, and router table. You'll also become familiar with the wider woodshop space and learn how to plan and execute a woodworking project from start to finish.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with a one-of-a-kind cutting board and a solid foundation in basic woodworking skills.

Space is limited, so sign up today and start your woodworking journey!

Safety

  • All students must take the woodworking orientation before signing up for the class. This ensures that all students are thoughtfully made aware of the dangers of the equipment.
  • At each step of the process students will be reminded of the specific concerns with each piece of equipment. We will go over and uphold proper technique for safe operation at each machine. I take safety very seriously and plan to impart this mentality on the students with specific examples of what to look out-for and feedback on their technique with each machine.

Liability

Students ultimately are responsible for themselves and are responsible for any damage that occurs to the equipment or themselves. This falls within the standard operations of the wood shop, for example burnt sandpaper on the drum sander would be replaced by Make (as it is normally) but a triggering of the sawstop safety break will require reimbursement by the student to the woodshop.
In the event of an injury, that will also be the students responsibility, however this will be highly unlikely so long as the students follow instructions and conduct themselves appropriately.
Wood shop equipment maintenance and reservation

It is important that all of the machines are in working condition for the class. If a machine is made inoperable before the class and can not be fixed in time, the class must be rescheduled or canceled. It is Make Nashville's responsibility to maintain the wood shop equipment.
