You’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of the weaving process, from project design and warp preparation to weaving and finishing techniques.
Class Project: Ikat
Ikat is an ancient, global textile art where patterns are created through resist-dyeing the yarn before weaving, a technique named for the Malay word meaning “to tie.” The yarn sections are tightly bound (the resist) to prevent the Indigo dye from penetrating, resulting in a pre-patterned warp. We will use a floor loom and plain weave—the simplest interlacement—to lock these patterned warp threads into place, allowing the characteristic blurred, feathered Ikat design to be the sole visual focus of our finished cloth. This method, known as Warp Ikat, showcases how complex color control can be achieved before the weaving even begins.
