Intro to Solo Jazz for Swing Dance & Lindy Hop

We know sometimes it's hard to make a commitment to a dance class series, whether it's because of work or because you're not sure if you'd like the dance. This is for you - the chance to try out swing dancing with no strings attached and no worries.

Just 2 hours on a weekend afternoon, you get to experience what you would be doing in a short 4 week swing dance series, compressed for you. If you're a bootcamp kind of junkie, this is perfect. If you just prefer to dip your toes in the water and test it a bit, this is a great way to try swing dancing out without commitment.

In this intensive introduction, you will learn what is called authentic jazz - a dance done to the music of the 1930s and 40s, which was swing music or jazz music, hence the term authentic jazz. The use of "authentic" is to differentiate it from lyrical or Broadway jazz, which came later in the 1950s. This is a rhythmic dance with a variety of movements and a joyful feel. There are simple body isolations, simple rhythmic footwork and some comical or funny steps. The whole purpose of authentic jazz is to express yourself and communicate with the music and your dance partners. It has a quaint vintage style due to it being a dance from the 1930s. It's steps and movement are the basics of modern day African-American dances. James Brown and Michael Jackson were taught how to do some of these authentic jazz steps and created their own genres of dance from it.

The music we use comes direct or inspired from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The lush vocals of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald or Anita O'Day, the big band sounds of the Count Basie Orchestra, the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra or the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Sometimes we play the modern stylings of present day small groups like the Hot Sugar Band, the Hot Swing Sextet or the Gordon Webster Band.

B Swing Lindy organizes class, workshops and dance events for lindy hop, solo jazz (also known as authentic jazz and vernacular jazz), 1920s and 30s charlestons, tap dance (rhythm tap and traditional tap) and social swing dancing.
