Intro to NW Native Cedar Basketry “My paternal Grandmother’s family-the Effmans-are well known Karuk weavers. It is from that heritage I came to recognize the connection between the plant world and human beings. The plant will tell you what kind of basket it wants to be. The human needs to listen, work with the plant so together a new object with a “centered” being is created.” - Celeste Whitewolf
With honor and gratitude, we welcome Celeste Whitewolf for a one-day workshop introducing students to the art and tradition of weaving with cedar. Students will learn to use a jerry stripper, to cut, split and peel soaked cedar bark into workable material. Celeste will teach students a “plaited start”, offering instruction on twining and demonstrating various finishing techniques including “simple cut”, “loop over” and “ woven”. Students will leave with a finished cedar basket, at least 4 inches square. the technique of twining to create a small cedar basket, at least 4” square.
Students are asked to bring their own small, sharp knife.
