Intro to Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga with Sarah Durney Hatcher
Saturday, November 13th, 3pm-5pm ~ €30
Take an in-depth look at Mysore style of ashtanga yoga and find out what makes this type of practice much different from a led yoga class. Here we will learn the tools needed to become confident and capable of attending a Mysore-style ashtanga yoga class.
The workshop will start with a brief introduction outlining the history and philosophy of ashtanga yoga, and the allies which support a successful, long term safe yoga practice. The rest of the workshop will focus on exploring the classical hatha principles that support what we do on the mat:
- bandha: internal locks or subtle awarenesses;
- drishti: looking points which help with focus as well as support alignment;
- vinyasa: breath-movement system of linking breath with movement;
- dhyana: meditation;
- asana: posture and seat of looking;
- pranayama: ujjayi breath, the heart of the practice.
We will learn the classic positions of Surya Namaskar A and B (sun salutations); investigate some of the standing poses and only go so far into the series as it is fit for each individual.
The workshop is open to those who are new to yoga or haven't done ashtanga yoga before; and anyone interested in starting a Mysore-style ashtanga yoga practice.
About Sarah:
Sarah is a Senior Yoga Teacher registered with Yoga Alliance. She first stepped on a yoga mat when she was 17 and has been practicing ashtanga yoga since 2000. Sarah began her studies with renowned teachers Nancy Gilgoff, Christine Hoar and Randa Chehab and went on studying with Sri K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois in Mysore (India).
In 2008 she met David Garrigues, from whom she learnt the third series, and assisted him with the opening of the Ashtanga Yoga School of Philadelphia. Sarah is currently working on the fourth series under the guidance of David and Dena Kingsberg. Chanting, meditation, and the study of Sanskrit are an integral part of Sarah's daily practice and help balance the intensity of the physical practice.
Sarah is mother to two beautiful sons, Dashiel and Calvin. When she is not playing with them or practicing on her mat, she enjoys rock climbing, skiing, and walking in the hills.
