What to Bring: Comfortable clothing that allows for free movement, preferably tights as they help with body awareness, water, and a willingness to explore and have fun!
Wearing jeans/skirts and dresses are not recommended as they limit flexibility and movement. Tights are preferred as they help you see and use the muscles that need to be awakened.
The art of mime is best learned/practiced barefoot, so this will be encouraged.
Please try not to eat heavy foods prior and preferably do not eat 1-2 hours before the workshop as we will be doing physical warm-up exercises at the very beginning. There will be a one hour lunch break and a couple short mid breaks. You may want to bring drinking water and food if you wish. There are also open restaurants nearby.

Your Instructor: Sule Gurbuz
With 40 years of experience in the art of mime, I am thrilled to bring my passion and expertise to Curious Comedy. My journey into the world of mime began in 1984 with the Taner Barlas Mime Theatre in Istanbul. Under the guidance of Taner Barlas, I discovered how to express my artistic side without words, gaining invaluable skills in body awareness, storytelling, and physical control.
In 1984, our troupe performed a play called "A Seagull," a story written by Richard Bach and adapted to the stage by Taner Barlas. This production won the prestigious Avni Dilligil Award in 1985, marking a significant milestone in our early artistic journey. During my formative years with Taner Barlas Mime Theatre (1984-1987), our troupe created the mime play "LONG STORY SHORT," a collection of 13 short mime performances. Although these plays were not recorded due to technical limitations, the memories and creative inspiration remain vivid in my mind. These experiences continue to fuel my dream of forming a new team to recreate and stage both new and old mime plays.
My career in mime and clowning extended throughout Istanbul from 1992 to 1997, where I brought joy and laughter to many audiences. During this time, I also had the thrilling experience of instructing numerous mime workshops throughout Istanbul, including various university and high school theatre groups.
From 1998 to 2016, I had the privilege of working as a Clown Doctor in the hospitals of Istanbul with the International Theodora Children's Services Foundation, using my skills to bring comfort and smiles to young patients. During these 18 years, I participated in annual Clown Doctor training in Switzerland and Turkey. We had amazing instructors from all over Europe who taught us creative workshops in mime, improvisation, movement, emotional expression, stomp, crazy musical instruments, puppet making, dark clown, balloon art, magic, and more. In addition to my mime and clowning work, I served as an ESL teacher at Yildiz Technical University from 1997 to 2017, where I also taught mime from 1999 to 2014.
In January 2022, I moved to Portland and was introduced to Coho Theatre's clown workshops. This led me to conduct a few mime workshops and perform a mime show at the annual Coho Theatre Clown Festival in 2023. In April 2024, I started teaching at Bridge Rat Studios and in June 2024 at The Hive Art School in ADX.
I am excited to share the art of mime with a new generation of performers at Curious Comedy, helping them unlock their creative potential and master the silent yet powerful language of mime.
