I believe if you can write; you can draw. In writing, you make very precise, well practiced lines and circles, complex figures like 3,4,8,B,G,Q and W. You can draw triangles, stick figures, simple faces, stars and flowers. So, drawing is not the problem. The problem is seeing. Not just seeing but seeing and then drawing what you see.
This beginner’s four part course will teach you to see as you have never seen before and help you to learn how to convert what you see into a proficient representation of what you are trying to portray.
Each session will come with a private study task to help you develop your skills and techniques. The materials and equipment you need are included in the price of this short course so all you need to arrive with is an open mind.
The materials and equipment will be yours to keep.
Session 1 - Observation
In this session we will get back to basics concerning the materials and equipment required to produce good drawings. You will learn what paper and pencils(graphite) to choose and how amazing erasers can be as drawing tools. You will also learn how to observe and measure using only your hands and a pencil. You will produce your first, well observed drawing.
Session 2 - Negative spaces
Some things, like a bicycle, a chair, a leafy plant and boats can be very difficult to observe and draw accurately because of their complex shapes and angles. In this session you will learn another way of seeing things to make these observations less daunting. You will also learn how architects and designers use this technique to create witty and sophisticated visuals.
Session 3 - Light and shade
In this session you will, once again, learn to see things that you may not have seen before and which will transform your ability to create realistic drawings. You will learn how the Impressionists discovered how colourful shadows and highlights really are. We will be working in the gray scale but, still, the complexity will challenge you.
Session 4 - Texture and pattern
When it comes to drawing; if you use your pencil the way you have always used it, you will never be able to make exciting drawings. In this session we will play with pattern and texture and learn a few things from the way the greatest 20th century artists created thrilling drawings.
Participants will gain maximun benefit from attending all four sessions, if you book all four sessions, a 15% discount for the whole series can be applied upon booking session four.
