Interpreting bird language is an ancient skill that people have used for thousands of years for their survival. Animals and birds share a common language. Birds are keenly aware of their surroundings and often very vocal about what they observe—songbirds especially–and communicate this through their songs, calls, and other voices. We can learn to understand this language–in fact, we are “hard wired” to learn this–and to use it to increase our own empathy, attentiveness, awareness, and sensitivity to our surroundings and others, as well as to develop a deeper connection with the natural world.
What will I experience during this workshop?
During the workshops, you’ll explore the dynamic interconnections of nature through learning bird language. Songbirds are the “alarm system” of the forest, broadcasting the whereabouts of hawks, owls, eagles, predatory mammals and more through their calls and postures. Learn through a combination of engaging presentations coupled with guided field observation techniques.

Your Instructors:
CLAUDELLE CHARETTE (she/her)has explored different disciplines such as fine art, to bioecology to farming. It was in 2017 that she fell in love with the 8 Shields education modal. She attended the Art of Mentoring workshop in Québec through Coyote Programs. This way of living answered a deep longing to belong and to experience connection to life…enough to drive across the country to immerse herself into this practice with Wisdom of the Earth School. She graduated from the Immersion (2021) and Apprenticeship (2022). She is now continuing her deep nature connection by mentoring children at the Wolf Pups program at Wisdom of The Earth, and staying involved in the community in order to feed this ideal scene of a thriving village deeply rooted to nature. Claudelle brings with her the gift of deep quiet mind and presence. As well as spontanious playfullness and laughters by her mischievious spirit. Bird language and scouting are what sparks her up. You might find her by the ocean watching the sun rising or bringing some beatbox in our nature songs.

MARIE WHIMBEY (she, her) Greetings! My name is Marie, I grew up on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, where the salty air fills the lungs and the ocean horizon is abundant. My experience is a fun blend of nature based skills and mentoring, youth work and theatrics.
In 2016, I began years of study with master clown teacher David MacMurray Smith in “Pochinko clown technique” (mask, clown, performance training). I became a performer, clown instructor and event management for arts and culture in Vancouver. In 2018 I trained in nature-based expressive arts in Colorado using the LifeArt Process of Tamalpa Institute. In 2020 my desire to be closer to the land led me to nature-based education with the 8 Shields and Coyote Mentoring approach. I joined Thriving Roots “Wild & Alive Adult Program” and the “Tend the Fire Youth Mentoring Training” Program. I loved it so much that I dedicated another 2 full years to train in the full-time Wisdom of the Earth “Adult Immersion Program” and their “Teaching Apprenticeship Program” on Salt Spring Island. I now work as a nature based youth mentor for Cahoots Outdoor Youth Programs, Heartwood Learning Community and Thriving Roots and offer nature based workshops throughout the Southern tip of the island and surrounds.
Today some of my favorite things are spending nights under the stars and sleeping on the earth, fire making, animal processing, butchering, skin tanning, foraging plants, awareness and opening senses in nature, song circles, storytelling, and community building. I’m appreciated for my sense of humor, playful spirit, laughter, and therapeutic care.
