Completion of Intro to Long Form Improv encouraged!
This is an 8-week introductory class focused on learning about the Meisner approach to acting. In class, students will be asked to engage in Meisner devised exercises that connect them to their own instincts and experiences.There will be homework between classes, necessarily, to practice these rudimentary exercises. This primary skill will be followed by doing assigned scene study with a partner. Between class homework with a partner solidifies learning basic skills of acting in actual scenes. Scenes will be performed in class followed by acting notes from the instructor.
*First time actors who have difficulty learning lines will be offered coaching support.
About the Teacher
Russell Galloway, an actor, improviser, acting coach & trainer, brings a depth of experience to a first time formal Meisner acting class at The Bird Comedy Theater! Early on, he trained with Studio A.C.T. in San Francisco and later graduated from the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse in NYC. Following induction into The Players Club of NYC, he performed, taught and coached professional actors over 20 years on both coasts. Russell sees the Meisner technique as a bridge between the freedom he felt as an improvisor and when performing scripted acting. Where improv focuses on “yes, and”, Meisner focuses on “moment to unanticipated moment” using one’s own instincts and experiences. Avoiding “cookie cutter actors”, Meisner wanted students to be the best actors they could be as the individuals they were. This is the philosophy Russell brings to the class and course work.
Classes take place Sundays from 1pm-4pm,May 11th 2025 - July 29th 2025, with a class performance Thursday,July 3rd at 7:30pm.
