About this Event
Join us for an invigorating hands-on outdoor workshop that takes you on a creative journey through the process of cyanotype printing. Using natural materials and found shadows, you’ll unlock the secrets of this unique photographic technique while drawing inspiration from the local environment of Alameda Point.
This workshop is led by multimedia artists Simone Lassar and Clara Pitt, who will introduce you to the cyanotype process, a historic photographic printing method that uses light-sensitive solutions to create unique prints.
No prior experience is necessary and all levels of skill are welcome. This workshop is recommended for folks ages 10 and up.
What we’ll do
In this workshop, we’ll start with an overview of the cyanotype process. Then, we will walk around and learn about the Alameda Point environment together with a focus on finding shadows in situ and materials to create shadows with. The natural wetland ecosystem of Alameda Point starkly contrasts with its industrial built environment, creating opportunities for interesting juxtaposition between the built and natural world. Once shadows and materials have been found, we will mix the chemicals and coat paper with the cyanotype solution together. We will create several compositions and expose them to sunlight to produce the distinctive blue and white tones that cyanotypes are known for.
Our instructors will be providing guidance and recommendations at every step to help you engage with this explorative and playful process!
What to Bring
- Please bring any special objects that you’d like to print with (think anything with interesting textures and levels of transparency – leaves, plants, feathers, glass.) We will provide all other necessary materials.
- We recommend wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
- Bring layers. The majority of this workshop will take place outside.
What You’ll take Home
By the end of the workshop, you'll have a solid foundation in the cyanotype process and unique prints to take home.
