International Performance Art Music Ensemble MARAS willbe presenting their Debut Latvian Concerts at FREE RIGA VISKALI on the Evening of Tuesday, February 18th at 8pm and will follow up the next night with an appearance at the World Famous Aleponija on Wednesday, February 19th at 9pm.
A little about the Group....
Maras creates intuitive, poetic and psychedelic landscapes, through deep hypnotic and resonant music, imbued with rich folklore. They are a music and performance art collective that is in constant movement and change. Inspired by old music styles and singing traditions in the north, such as yoiking and chanting, they embark on a listening, creative, hypnotic and intuitive journey that hopes to create lasting vibrations in our consciousness. On stage, Maras will take their place in their own fascinating way!
MARITA ISOBEL SOLBERG (MaRa)B.1977, Tromsø, NorwayMarita is a chanter, a musician and a visual artist focusing on sound, performance art and installation. She has throughout her upbringing been surrounded by meaningful materials closely related to nature, crafts and seasonal work, and exploring artistic expressions, singing and different musical genres since childhood. Growing up in Manndalen in North-Troms, Norway, she was from an early age exposed to traditions and people from the world through the festival Riddu Riđđu, her ancestors are a blend of many northern peoples; Sámi, Swedish, Kven, Karelian and Finnish. Marita studied art at Nordland Kunst and Filmschool (1997-1999) and at the Oslo National Academy of Arts/KHIO (2002-2007). With a base in Tromsø, Norway, she lives a nomadic life on the Norwegian and international art scene. Her strong connections to Northern-Norway, she has done commision work; conserts, performances and exhibition work at Musikkfestuka in Nordland, the Riddu Riđđu Festival, BarentsSpektakel, Bukta Open Air Festival, The Arctic Arts Festival, North Norwegian Art Museum and the fictional Sámi Daiddamusea. The common denominator for her projects is the intention to challenge the audience as well as herself, to try reaching into the core and create vibrations that have repercussions.
Risto Puurunen alias CW01 is a Finnish artist and musician who grew up in the well-being dust of an asbestos mine, who as a young man started to grumble and ended up doing the most interesting art stories. Risto, also known as the clean giant, is a founding member of Helsinki's Cleaning Women band and is Director of Haihatus Art Center in Joutsa, Finland, and so much more...
Steve Vanoni is an American Expat artist and musician who has resided for the last 15 years in the Baltics, primarily in Tallinn and has lived in Riga for one year. He has performed throughout the EU, ran a Great Underground art gallery in the US for a decade, was an art teacher for 25 years and played with numerous bands in the US and Estonia.
