About the panel discussion “Promoting Safe and Regular Pathways on Migration

In recent years, migration has been at the forefront of discussions at the global level, priorities on political parties’ agendas and during national elections, especially in the global North. This event aims to shed light on how migration works and how safe and regular pathways can positively contribute to the Danish society.

Throughout the panel discussion, the speakers will dive into the different aspects of human mobility, its recent trends and its main challenges, exploring how it is possible to create more and better opportunities for people to move in a regular and beneficial way as part of a comprehensive approach to human mobility.

The event will especially focus on the topic of international labour mobility and highlight key trends and debates on the different aspects of labour mobility, such as the legal, socio-economic, human rights and migration management dimensions.

About International Migrants Day 2024

Migration is normal. It is natural to strive for better for a safer place to live, for more economic opportunities, for cultural exchange, for family, for education, for personal development, for love. People move for many reasons.

However, conflict, political instability, economic inequality and climate change are largely driving today's movement of people around the world. We want to see more migration driven by economic opportunity and hope, rather than by persecution, disaster and despair.

While some journeys are well-planned, straightforward and enriching, others are unexpected, challenging and dangerous; most exist on a spectrum, as life is not black and white. Regardless of circumstance, IOM is helping people find safety and opportunity by facilitating safe and regular pathways for migration–at every step of the journey.

The evidence is overwhelming that when migration is managed safely and strategically, it can be a powerful force for good and drive true sustainable development around the world. By facilitating regular pathways for migration, we can enable opportunities for migrants, better protect their rights, and contribute to greater prosperity in the countries migrants come from and those that host them.

Together–one step at a time–we can move forward toward a world where we fully protect human rights and migrant safety, and where everyone has a better chance to flourish.

About UCPH Migration Research Platform

The University of Copenhagen Platform for Migration and Refugee Research (UPCH Migration Research Platform) aims to promote a broader interdisciplinary dialogue both internally at UCPH and within the international research field.

Research interest in refugee and migration issues has been growing significantly both globally and at national levels. Nonetheless, both in Denmark and internationally research on migration and refugees often remains fragmented along disciplinary divides. Furthermore, journals, conferences and other initiatives dedicated to “migration studies” or “refugee studies” tend to attract scholars from a limited set of disciplines, thereby excluding important contributions and emerging research on migration and refugee issues within the broader academy.

About IOM Denmark

Denmark has been a member state of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) since 1954. In 2006, the Government of Denmark granted IOM privileges and immunities through an agreement signed between the two parties, leading to the opening of the IOM Denmark country office in Copenhagen in 2009.

Since 2013, the office of IOM Denmark is located at the UN City in Nordhavn, together with some of the other UN agencies in Denmark. In 2022, IOM signed the One UN Common Host Agreement between Denmark and the UN.

In 2024, the office became a Country Office for Partnership and Advocacy (COPA) and a Country Office with Coordination Function (COCF), leading IOM’s liaison and coordination with strategic partners in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

This enables IOM to strengthen collaboration with and between partners in the Nordic countries on areas of mutual interest and increase their knowledge and understanding of IOM’s strategies and work globally.
