In celebration of International Bat Night, join Monitoring and Research Officer, Henry Stanier, for this exciting guided walk as he surveys Woodwalton Fen's bats and learn how we carry out our wildlife monitoring. Use a bat detector to identify the many species of bats, learn about the habitats they live in and their varied lifestyles.
About Henry Stanier:
With a fascination for bats for over 30 years, Henry has applied this enthusiasm to his work in monitoring the success of the Great Fen, including training volunteers in bat survey skills. Henry set up the Ecology Groups, teams of voluntary surveyors across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, and as part of this has been monitoring the bats of the Great Fen since 2011. His interest in bats has taken him to Australia, Costa Rica and Hungary. He has run courses on bat identification for several years, and worked for the Wildlife Trust for nearly 20 years; monitoring birds, bats, dormice, amphibians, dragonflies and butterflies and plants.
About the event:
Pre-booking is essential. Your safety is our priority, so all appropriate social distancing and hygiene measures will be implemented. Please read all of the important information below.
Attendees should park at the far end of Chapel Road on the field-side bank of the Great Raveley Drain and meet at the Woodwalton Fen Nature Reserve entrance bridge.
Please note, toilets will not be accessible for this event. Please also be aware that there are a large number of ticks and other biting insects at Woodwalton Fen, so long trousers tucked into socks and closed-toe footwear is recommended. An insect repellent is also useful. The ground can be wet and slippery and the weather may be cold at night, so please choose clothing and footwear accordingly. Please bring a torch, but not a wind-up style.
Cost: £10 Wildlife Trust BCN Members, £15 Non-Members.
Please book a ticket for everyone who is attending, as those without a ticket will not be admitted.
