Elizabeth Swarthout, a graduate of the Preparatory Department at Eastman School of Music, received an MS degree in social work at Columbia University and her second BA degree in music at the University of California, Berkeley.
As a pianist and fortepianist, she has performed both as soloist and in ensemble locally and nationally. She studied fortepiano with Malcom Bilson in Ithaca, New York and Baroque practices with Laurette Goldberg locally. With Margret Elson, the Elson-Swarthout Duo received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to record a CD, "20th Century American 4-Hand Piano Music". The duo toured the Eastern U.S., including a performance at the Kennedy Center. She has also performed for many years as a member of the Berkeley Piano Club.
Elizabeth serves on the faculty of the Golandsky Institute, teaching the Taubman Approach to Piano Playing, having received her certification as a Master Teacher in 2010. For many years she taught in the annual international Golandsky Summer Symposium. She was the founder and director of the annual Golandsky Institute Berkeley Seminar for 20 years. Most recently she gave a talk on the Taubman approach at the Palo Alto branch.
For decades she has adjudicated at Baroque festivals in Portland, OR, Orinda and Jr. Bach, OMTA Classical festival in Portland and has also presented talks on early music performance practices at the Ft. Worth Suzuki Institute, students in Kansas City and to teachers in Sacramento.
Elizabeth has given lectures, workshops, and performances for various Suzuki Institutes locally (Sacramento and SF State) and nationally (Ft. Worth, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah). More recently she gave a master class for students of local Suzuki teachers. For decades she was an evaluator for the Certificate of Merit and has been a judge for numerous festivals and competitions.Elizabeth teaches in Richmond, Davis and in Spain. She also has professional students in France, Spain and Ireland. One of her specialties as a Taubman teacher is to retrain injured pianists. Although now her students are adults (including many teachers), she is especially interested in helping teachers to prevent injury by developing a healthy technique in the next generation of students.
