This interdisciplinary course is designed to advance the knowledge and skills required to recognize findings necessitating medical referral for patients in a variety of settings. This course contains a combination of asynchronous online content and a live on-campus lecture. The course will build on the clinician’s current clinical expertise through lecture, collaborative decision-making, and interdisciplinary case discussions. Medical conditions that mimic musculoskeletal dysfunction, and “must know” red flags across the lifespan will be highlighted. Evidence-based management will be addressed to guide the role of physical therapists as collaborative practitioners who are ideally positioned to identify manifestations warranting referral.
At the conclusion of the course the participant will:
- Identify signs and symptoms associated with selected medical conditions that mimic musculoskeletal dysfunction
- Utilize evidence-based medical guidelines to determine indications for further diagnostic imaging.
- Apply clinical decision making to orthopedic, neurologic, cardiopulmonary, and pediatric patient populations.
