***Please note: this workshop meets for five sessions on consecutive Thursdays: January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5***
Black Mountain College was one of the most influential experiments in arts education in the United States, known for its radical interdisciplinarity, emphasis on process, and commitment to learning by doing.
In this five-part workshop series, artist Jason Lord leads participants through studio explorations of the processes of artists such as Ruth Asawa, Josef and Anni Albers, Robert Rauschenberg, Buckminster Fuller, and John Cage, all of whom were important artists and educators at Black Mountain College.
Each session offers a hands-on, in-depth exploration of a different artist’s practice, how it connects to the work of contemporary artists, and how it can be applied to your own creative vision.
All skill levels are welcome.
About the instructor
Jason Lord is an interdisciplinary artist, designer, and educator who engages in rigorous conceptual, material, and procedural experimentation through drawing, installation, print, sculpture, assemblage, artist books, social practice, performance, writing, sound, video, photography, ritual, and their many intersections. His practice is prolific, and his work is often obsessive, often pushing at the boundaries between craft, art, and design and always seeking answers to the core questions “What does it mean to be human?” and “What can art do?” Jason holds a BFA in studio art from UNC–Chapel Hill and an MFA in studio arts from UNC Greensboro. He has exhibited widely and has received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Hambidge Center, Peter Bullough Foundation, and Penland School of Craft.
