Due to Shashi Tharoor-Modi friendship, the BJP takes control of Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram Municipal CorporationThe BJP, thanks to its alliance with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, won the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation in Kerala. This ended the 45-year Left rule in the municipal corporation of the state capital.
While this victory has cheered the BJP, it has also raised strong questions about Shashi Tharoor's political future. Tharoor has been at loggerheads with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for several months. Not only do both of them praise each other publicly, but without informing Congress, Prime Minister Modi has also given various responsibilities to Shashi Tharoor.
Shashi Tharoor has also accepted them without the party's permission. For example, after the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, Modi sent Shashi Tharoor to the United States as the leader of an all-party delegation. Recently, Shashi Tharoor was invited as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, although Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, respectively, were not invited to the dinner hosted by the President in honour of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He accepted it.
After capturing the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, speculation has started again about Shashi Tharoor. The popular belief is that Shashi Tharoor is going to be the face of the BJP in the Kerala Assembly elections next year. The state leaders of the Congress believe that despite campaigning in the municipal elections, Shashi Tharoor did nothing for the victory of the Congress. Rather, he encouraged his followers so that the BJP would get votes. Although the extent of this allegation or belief is not proven, Shashi Tharoor congratulated the winners after the results were announced.
The fact is that the BJP has benefited from the three-way fight between the Left Alliance, the Congress-led UDF alliance and the BJP. Out of the total 101 wards in Thiruvananthapuram, the BJP-led NDA won 50, the Left alliance LDF won 29, and the Congress-led UDF won 19. Independent candidates won two seats. The BJP needs the support of one of the two to form the municipal corporation board.
Apart from winning Thiruvananthapuram, the BJP has also managed to retain the Palakkad municipality it won in 2020. But in terms of numbers, they are still just insignificant and the third force overall. The Congress-led UDF alliance has achieved the most surprising result in this vote. This vote is indicative of the fact that they are moving towards seizing power by displacing the Left Front in the assembly elections after a few months.
