Join curator Sophie Dutton for a guided tour of the Nature in Mind exhibition and a viewing of Madge Gill's work at Stratford Library.
About this Event

The curator of The Line's multi-site Madge Gill exhibition, Sophie Dutton, will join Megan Piper for this two-part event. Focusing specifically on the history of Madge Gill’s work, they will explore the artworks on the route, take in the heritage and natural environment, and discuss the benefits and challenges of increasing access to public art and green spaces in East London. This will be followed by an exciting opportunity to view a selection of Madge Gill’s work first-hand at Stratford Library. Sophie Dutton, curator of The Line’s Madge Gill installation, will provide insights into this collection and the history of Madge Gill’s work.

The tour will begin at 1pm outside the Good Hotel at Royal Victoria Dock and will follow the route of The Line to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, finishing at 4pm. We will then travel to Stratford Library, where the archive visit will take place between 4:30 and 5:30pm.

This event is part of a three-day public programme, Inside Out: Public Art, Nature and Mental Wellbeing. Inside Out builds on Madge Gill: Nature in Mind, a multi-site exhibition of the late Newham-based artist’s work and a series of creative workshops in collaboration with Mind. Focusing on the link between nature and mental health, The Line seeks to facilitate dialogues between artists, cultural organisations, and mental health specialists through an engaging three-day programme that consists of creative activities, site visits and a roundtable discussion.

This programme would not have been possible without the support of our partners and funders, London Metropolitan University, Mind Tower Hamlets and Newham, National Lottery Heritage Fund, St William, Royal Docks Team, London Borough of Newham, London Legacy Development Cooperation and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Step-free access is available on all of the route, apart from one section on the River Lea that isn’t accessible for disabled users. We have highlighted an alternative route on our downloadable map that cuts out the ramps that aren’t DDA compliant and offers a fully accessible journey. Stratford Library is accessible for disabled people, toilet for wheelchair users and a lift to the first floor. If you have any additional accessibility requirements, please contact [email protected] prior to the event.

Please note that photography and video recording will take place at this event.
