About this Event
What is Inqlab?
Inqlab, which means ‘revolution’ in Urdu, is a place where we build community by engaging in political education, experiential anti-colonial activities, and experiment with revolutionary tools for change. Each monthly session, we unravel the knots of our collective oppression and strategize the means for constructing a world beyond the current occupation.
February Inqlab! Decolonizing Mutual Aid
Our February gathering unpacks mutual aid from a decolonial lens. Given the timeliness of the concept, we begin first by distinguishing between resource reallocation practices, that largely align with settler state interests, vs. BIPOC cultures of reciprocity. We'll explore the historical context of how BIPOC mutual aid practices have been essential for survival yet heavily penalized by the settler state. Together we will understand how mutual aid has and can continue to dismantle settler economies of extraction.
In the next Inqlab, we explore with play, through my ‘Mutual Aid Mix Up’ game and sow seeds of change through ‘People’s Budget’ activity. An introduction to different modalities of non-settler governance will aid in imagining new systems from the imperial core. As a collective, we will unlearn, uproot, and experiment with decolonial forms of knowledge creation.
When, Where, How.
Inqlab is offered in person with light refreshments served.
Our Inqlab community lab is a space to understand systems of oppression while building upon modes of liberation; a creative undoing of sorts. Our political unlearning will incorporate experiential modes of embodiment that range from the whimsical to the astute.
Lastly, the Inqlab community lab is followed by an informal gathering to further connections, share laughs, and relax in a community space. Join us for the social hour, stay for the light refreshments, and joys of community.
Dr. Verma curates suggested readings for each session, which are not required for participation; they offer context for our discussions and decolonial activities.
You can attend this program in person in LA! If you can’t make the this event, we encourage you to join us for future sessions.
