Masterclass in Terra Soma Yoga @ Te Aro, Pōneke / Wellington “The times are urgent,: Let us slow down”
- Bayo Akomolafe
We have the opportunity, right now in these mythic times of composting normative-consumer culture, to re-organise how we approach our practice.
If your practice has no dirt on it, who does it serve?
- (We'll unpack that one together...)
---------------------------------------------------
What I want as a practitioner and teacher of yoga these days, is space and time to be and to practice together without the posturing, without the ridged protection necessary when the conditions of gathering are unclear and ungrounded.
I've seen a lot of hooha in my years as a yoga teacher. It seems the dissonance with whats being taught and whats being experienced within yoga and wellness culture could/ is turning sincere practitioners away from practice.
I believe now, perhaps more than ever, yoga can really support us to feel connected and resourced amidst times of challenge and change. But it needs to be honest, inclusive and patient.
I believe we have some work to do as teachers and practitioners to care take the perception of yoga, and tidy up whats parading as wellness, by being clear ourselves on what and why and how we teach.
I see yoga and wellness culture as a great place to explore what it is to truly be ourselves in all our flavours and spice, while caring for our growing sense of our own needs and the needs of others. I see these collective practice spaces as a profound opportunity to metabolise difficulty together and to strengthen our internal and communal sense of support and power.
What is dirt time?
'Dirt time' is real time experience, #IRL, time in the fluid-flesh-dirt of our felt experience. Dirt time is clocking real hours walking the talk, practicing ways of experiencing self and responding to environment that generate the kind of world we want to live in and open us to the kind of potential we have as human beings.
What will we be doing in the workshop?
We'll discuss and explore through practice:
What is yoga actually?
What are we doing in our practice, is it working toward our goals and values?
What could be valuable wisdom and ritual (repetition) to weave in?
How can we utilise our sensitivity as feeling beings, to access resonance so that we experience the kind of belonging that leads to active participation in personal and collective liberation?
You can expect:
Lecture and group discussion
Partner and group movement exercises
