More about Sisonke Papu - South African Xhosa Traditional Healer, Artist, Musician, Poet, Performer, Writer and more...
Sisonke Papu, also known by his spiritual name KHNYSA (“the one who must bring light”), is a South African traditional healer, artist, and breathwork facilitator. Rooted in African indigenous knowledge systems, Sisonke’s work merges the ancient with the modern, creating transformative spaces for deep healing and personal exploration. Trained in the healing arts of ubuGqirha (traditional healing) and certified in breathwork, Sisonke has dedicated his life to restoring the connection between the body, spirit, and cosmos through ritual, sound, and breath. His unique approach draws heavily from African cosmology, using sound and breath to guide participants into higher states of consciousness and physical healing.
As a sound artist, Sisonke integrates indigenous instruments like the mbira, marimba, uhadi, and adungu, utilizing the vibrational power of sound to realign the body’s energy and awaken ancestral memory. His sound journeys, often referred to as Sonic Medicine, explore the healing potential of vibrational frequencies, breath, and traditional African wisdom. Through his work, Sisonke has presented in sacred spaces globally, including residencies, wellness retreats, and festivals across Southern and Eastern Africa, New York, Los Angeles, and the UK, offering sound healing, breathwork, and ceremonial experiences that connect individuals with their deeper selves and the collective consciousness.
Sisonke’s commitment to cultural preservation and spiritual expansion has led to collaborations with artists, healers, and scientists. Recent projects include the installation ISIKHUMBUZO: Site of Remembrance at Hazendal Festival: Soil Edition, where he explored humanity’s connection to land and ancestors. KHNYSA is passionated about using sound as a medium to honor the earth and support environmental healing efforts.
Through his work, Sisonke // KHNYSA continues to honor the wisdom of his ancestors, offering pathways of healing and renewal to all those who seek connection with themselves, their roots, and the cosmos.
