The event series opens with a screening and subsequent discussion of the film Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert, organized by the Embassies of Austria and Switzerland and the Goethe-Institut Cyprus. The film portrays the life of the author in Berlin, Zurich, and Rome, her passionate relationship with Max Frisch, her journey into the desert, as well as her radical texts and readings, which encapsulate the guiding principle of her literature and life: “Truth is bearable for the human being.”She is Austrian, he Swiss; she a poet, he a playwright; she bold and vulnerable, he daring yet somewhat conventional: Ingeborg Bachmann and Max Frisch are already prominent figures in the international cultural scene when they first meet in Paris in the summer of 1958.
Following the film screening, there will be a discussion and exchange with film scholar Olga Kourelou and poet and literary scholar Marilena Zackheos.
Olga Kourelou holds PhD in Film Studies from King’s College London. Having held teaching positions at King’s College London and Sussex University, she is now Research Fellow at the University of Nicosia and an independent film curator. She served as a member of the Cyprus Cinema Advisory Committee and has now been appointed to the Subcommittee for Script Evaluation.
Olga’s research interests are in star studies, gender, race, and European cinema, with a particular focus on Greek-language film. She has contributed book chapters and articles to publications including New Cinemas: Journal of Contemporary Film, Journal of Greek Media and Culture and Celebrity Studies Journal.
Marilena Zackheos grew up in Moscow, Beijing, Nicosia, Geneva, and New York City. She holds degrees in Philosophy, Poetry Writing, English Language and Literature. She has published on postcolonial literary and cultural studies, psychoanalysis and trauma, gender and sexuality. Her creative writing has been translated into Greek, Turkish, Serbian, Albanian, Slovenian, and German. She is the author of the poetry book Carmine Lullabies (2016) and the poetic sequence Arizona, CY (2024). She currently teaches poetry at the University of Cyprus.
