WHAT KIND OF GOAL IS APPROPRIATE?
The focus of this Mastermind Group is on helping participants clarify and achieve their most important longer-term (10-month) goal, whatever that goal might be, personal or professional.
If you have more than one goal, that's okay. That said, we encourage you to focus narrowly with the group on what is most important and can benefit from group feedback and support.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THIS INFORMATIONAL SESSION
The first session will focus on two things: (1) introducing members to one another and learning about each others' first attempt at a 10-month goal, and (2) giving an overview of how the Mastermind group will work on a bi-weekly basis and answering any of questions, so potential participants can decide whether it is right for them.
WHAT TO EXPECT IF YOU CONTINUE
The first meeting will likely last an hour, but future meetings occur will last up to 1.5 hours, with meetings every other week (on Tuesdays from 12:30-14:00). We set short-term (2 week goals) in the service of the longer-term goal, and we check in with each other about how the goals are going, and what is or isn't working. Along the way, we'll occasionally have presentations or read and discuss essays or tips about the best ways to get where we're trying to go. Finally, we may agree to have pairs of accountability partners for more regular check-ins and stronger accountability.
Some of us have been meeting together for years and in general participants have found the process of actively working to clarify and remind each other about what we're working on and why to be extremely helpful.
WHAT IS REQUIRED OF YOU IF YOU'D LIKE TO CONTINUE AFTER THE INITIAL MEETING
If you like what you learn and want to continue, we'll expect the following:
(1) You should expect to participate for at least the first 6-months of the 10-month program. Of course, things come up and over time you might decide the group is not for you, in which case it is fine to stop participating, but the original intention should be to attend for at least that first 1/2 year.
(2) You should make an effort to give energy and time back to the group during the sessions, with the ideal of giving as much or more than you're getting in return.
(3) You should make your best effort to attend the meetings every two weeks. Of course we all have other commitments that will occasionally get in the way, but not being in the mood or deciding to go grab lunch with a friend is not the kind of reason that would be appropriate. The mastermind group is a commitment, and that's part of what helps it pay off with successful achievement of an important goal.
(4) You are expected to respect each other's anonymity and privacy by not sharing what you hear in the meetings.
WHAT IS A MASTERMIND GROUP
The concept of a mastermind group goes back to Napoleon Hill who defined the mastermind as “The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people who work toward a definite purpose” (Think and Grow Rich, 1937). A Mastermind Group is a mentoring concept through which individuals coach, learn from, and grow together, using the specialized knowledge and insight of each member to help benefit everyone.
Benefits of a mastermind group include:
Mutual support
Outside perspective
Resource/knowledge sharing
Long-term and short-term goal/vision clarity and achievement
Accountability
