Label execs and artists from record label 'nonclassical' will discuss how they scout, sign and develop artists into successful brands
About this Event

In association with UK Music (MAP) Dr Oliver Morris (Director of Education & Skills) will host a panel talk with selected industry experts and artists from the music label: ‘Nonclassical’.

Come and learn from both the label and artist perspective on how to develop musicians into a successful brand with a clear identity.

Nonclassical is a music promoter, record label and events producer presenting the best new classical, experimental and electronic music. Crossing genre and defying convention, we develop, produce and promote innovative music – supporting emerging artists and bringing new music to new audiences.

The panel will consist of Marcella Keating (Events and Marketing Manager), Charlotte Harding (Award-winning composer and saxophonist), Ben Nobuto (composer, pianist and producer), Lola de la Mata (conceptual sound artist).

Marcella Keating (she/her) currently works as the Events and Marketing Manager at Nonclassical, a UK-based music charity supporting artists working across contemporary classical, experimental and electronic music. In her role she is responsible for producing the live events calendar, running the Artist in Residence scheme supporting four early-career composers, and shares marketing duties with the Label Manager.

Charlotte Harding is an Ivors Composer Award-winning composer and saxophonist and graduate of the Royal College of Music where she studied with Mark-Anthony Turnage. Drawing on an eclectic mix of classical and cross-genre influences, her diverse career has seen her works performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Sadler’s Wells, Cadogan Hall, Three Choirs Festival, WOMAD and Kings Place. Charlotte is published by FaberAlt.

Ben Nobuto is a British/Japanese composer, pianist and producer from Kent, UK. With a style described as ‘postmodern’ (Nonclassical), ‘utterly contemporary’ (Manchester Collective) and ‘sonically dazzling’ (RPS Awards), his music explores themes of attention and fragmentation, drawing from internet culture and popular idioms in a playful, ironic and surreal manner. Often combining acoustic with electronic sounds, his interest lies in how processes from one can be applied to the other, and the relationship between the ‘human’ and ‘non-human’ in the context of a performance.

Lola de la Mata is a London born French/Spanish conceptual sound artist, composer, curator and musician (violin/voice/theremin). She harnesses improvisation in her collaborative performances with fellow musicians, dancers and performance artists, most recently with Eve Stainton. Tinnitus and aural diversity are at the core of her research practice, inspiring glass, metal, and ceramic musical instruments. Her upcoming project Oceans on Azimuth is released May 8th, for which her gaze is focused on the architecture of the ear and its auditory illusions. She has received commissions from the Riot Ensemble, Zubin Kanga, Nonclassical, Lisson Gallery, Spitalfields Music Festival, and crafted soundtracks for experimental film, documentary and the award winning feature film STOPMOTION by Robert Morgan, which received its U.S release February 23rd 2024.
