On Saturday October 18 at 7:30pm, renowned artist of the Indian sitar, Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury, will be performing a concert of North Indian classical music at the All Saints Episcopal Church at 7 Woodbridge St in South Hadley, MA. He will be accompanied on the tabla by master percussionist Pt. Arup Chattopadhyay. Tickets are on sale now through hartsne.org and will also be available at the door. The concert is another in the series of global music events presented by the local non-profit, now in its third season of presenting world music concerts at the church.
Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury is one of the most talented young exponents of Rampur Senia Gharana style of sitar-playing. Primarily trained in the Veen-Kar style of Sitar which draws techniques and idioms of the Veena, Indrajit has been able to carve a niche for himself with his eclecticism and versatility. Indrajit strives for a fine balance of traditionalism coupled with innovation and is renowned for his meditative introductions and lightning improvisations at high tempos. Brought up between USA and India, Indrajit draws on his rich background in collaborations with distinguished artists from other genres including Wynton Marsalis and has performed at venues such as Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and the Dover Lane Music Conference in Kolkata. In India, he is a featured performer on national television (Doordarshan).
At Halcyon Arts New England, Indrajit will be accompanied on tabla by Pandit Arup Chattopadhyay. Pt. Arup Chattopadhyay has established himself as a top-notch accompanist as well as a formidable soloist. Arup’s performances are admired for their exceptional tonal quality, clarity, and deep compositional repertoire, all presented with an innate sense of rhythm and melody. He began learning tabla at the age of six from his father, the eminent tabla artist, Pt. Pankaj Chattopadhyay. He then came under the tutelage of the world-renowned tabla maestro Pt. Shankar Ghosh, and is one of his premier disciples. Arup was awarded Top-Grade by All India Radio and Television. He rose to fame accompanying Pt. Ravi Shankar on tours throughout the USA, Canada and Europe.
Rarely seen in New England, a sitar performance of this caliber is a great opportunity for audiences of all ages to enjoy rich traditional music by some of its finest contemporary proponents. Chai and light refreshments will be served. Tickets range from $12 to $35 and are available in advance online from bit.ly/sitar25 and at the door, all ages welcomed.
